Hi, I'm Mike Lee. No, not that Mike Lee. He's someone else. No, not that one either. Me, Mike Lee, from New York, now in California.
Oh, you know a Mike Lee too? Nice. I know a bunch too. There are four at my company. And there were at least twelve at a previous company. Us Mike Lee's are everywhere.
"Kim is a total bitch."
Lisa looked shocked. "What? Why?"
"Because," I paused and cleared my throat, "she's annoying, spoiled, self-centered, manipulative, condescending, air-headed, and, well, a total bitch."
"Michael, come with me," commanded my father. I blinked, got up from my homework, and followed him. We walked into the family TV room.
"Sit down."
I sat down.
Right now, my brain has the same consistency as warm butternut squash, only more pink. My brain is a vegetable, it is, because I just finished watching six consecutive episodes of the Sopranos: 4th Season.
What kind of superpower would you want? Say you could have any superpower you could think of. You could fly or walk through walls or read minds.
Blood and gore isn't the kind of thing that scares me in movies. Ghosts are, but blood and guts, nah.
So when we walked into the theater on a bright Sunday afternoon to watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I was smiling. When I'm in a good mood, I like scary movies. And that day, I was in a good mood.
"They read Stupid White Men and think that's how all Americans are. You know that book, right? The one by Michael Moore."
"Yea."
"They think we all are gun-crazy and violent. That our media glorifies violence and aggression. And that we're all money-hungry capitalists who drive big gas-guzzling cars and eat fast food."
"I sure can't say it was a feel-good movie," she said. "I really wanted to promote this to all of my friends. But now, after seeing it, I'm not so sure…"
The rest of us agreed. Our first impression of Better Luck Tomorrow was mixed; it didn't leave us with a satisfactory feeling.
I watch Sex And The City and am proud of it, dammit.
Some may think that show kinda foo-foo. "Lots of touchy-feely female stuff going on in there," they say. "That show is all about women, made for women," they say.
But who exactly are "they"? And have "they" ever actually watched the show? Are "they" the same people who watch Oz and say, "Now there's a real show about men, made for men, despite the numerous anal rape scenes in the shower by prison inmates"?
"The entire American society is out to get Asians."
That line sums up the feelings of a sub-culture of Asian Americans.
